9 Basic steps for applying for a work permit from Canada

Do you have the heart of working in Canada set on you? This detailed Canada work visa guide will highlight your choices for working in Canada, whether or not you need a work permit, what the conditions are, the steps you need to take to apply for a work permit, as well as answering any questions you might have.

Another great attraction for temporary workers is that your spouse or wife will be entitled to apply for an open work permit and work with you in Canada and if your children will be able to attend school without you needing to apply for an additional study permit, which means you will be able to live and work in Canada and potentially apply for permanent residency if you get enough C But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look at what you need to know about how to apply, from start to finish, for a Canadian work permit.

1- What is the Temporary International Work Visa Program?

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as well as Jobs and Social Development Canada run the Temporary International Work Permit Program (TFWP) (ESDC).

What is the Impact Evaluation of the Labor Market?

A Labor Market Impact Assessment or LMIA is a document explaining that a local candidate will not fill out the position you are applying for in Canada.

2- Streams of temporary International Work Permit

Program of International Mobility

It is necessary to remember that applicants applying under the GAT must be citizens of a Member State specified here on the website of the World Trade Organization and would only be eligible to operate for a maximum of three months or 90 consecutive days over a span of twelve months with the TFWP in Canada.

Worker of High Pay

This stream is for Canadian employers who wish to hire a temporary foreign worker who will receive the province or territory they will work in Canada’s equivalent or above the median hourly wage.

Worker with Low Pay

This stream is for Canadian employers who want to hire a temporary foreign worker who will receive below the province or territory median hourly salary they will work in Canada.

Foreign laborers in agriculture

Canadian employers who want to temporarily hire farm workers can employ workers via the Agricultural Stream or the Seasonal Agricultural Stream (SAWP).

Seasonal agricultural workers are allowed to work for up to 8 months in Canada and you would need to be a resident of a participating country through the SAWP to be able to apply.

Home Aid Staff

These programs allow eligible caregivers to live and work temporarily in Canada until they have Canadian work experience of at least 24 months and can then apply for permanent residence.

About International Academics

All international students are eligible to work during the semester for a maximum of 20 hours every week and for longer during holidays, but you will need a temporary work permit if you want to work for longer. Researchers will, instead, need to apply for a temporary work permit.

3-Types of Permits for Jobs

Two different forms of Canadian work permits are available:

  • The Work Permit for Open Work
  • The Employer-Specific Permit for Work.

Open permit for the job

An open work permit will allow you to work in any location in Canada for any employer as long as:

  • Due to not complying with those requirements, they were not considered ineligibleStripteases, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages are not frequently provided by the company.

Employer-Specific Work Permit for Workers

By the conditions specified in your work permit, an employer-specific work permit will allow you to work in Canada, namely:

  • Your unique employer’s name
  • The time that you will live and work in Canada for
  • The position where it is possible to work.

4- Am I admissible?

As there are different categories of open and closed work permits under the International Migration Program and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, this is the tricky part. In particular cases, each work permit is intended for various purposes and different categories of foreign workers. The form of work permit for which you can apply is affected by factors such as:

  • Age of yours
  • The kind of work that you intend to do in Canada
  • The nation in which you reside
  • Your status on immigration
  • Whether you apply from within or outside Canada; and whether you apply from inside or outside Canada
  • Your proficiency and qualifications

Completing an online eligibility review is the best way to find out whether you are eligible for a Canadian work permit, which not only tells you whether you can work in Canada but also which work permit program you apply for.

Program of International Mobility (IMP)

Under the IMP, Canadian job authorizations can be available or locked. It is both simpler and quicker to obtain a work permit under this initiative because you do not need a labor market impact review and permits are mostly processed within 2 weeks. Take a look at the IMP’s most common work permit streams and their criteria to see if you are eligible for applications.

Job Certificate Post-Graduate

A post-graduation work permit (open work permit) may be valid for foreign students if they have graduated from a DLI in Canada and want to temporarily remain in the country to work. Their study program should last longer than 8 months and, by the time they apply for the work permit, they should have a valid study permit.

International Worker Program Temporary (TFWP)

To receive a work permit under one of the TFWP streams, you need a job offer that is backed by a labor market impact assessment. With more steps involved, the process of obtaining a work permit through the TFWP is longer because it focuses more on employers’ labor market needs in Canada. Under the TFWP, the job authorization streams are the following:

  • Flow from the High Wage Worker
  • Flow from Low Pay Worker
  • Stream Saisonal and Non-Saisonal Agricultural Worker
  • Stream of Global Talent

But no matter where you apply or what kind of work permit you are applying for, you must:

Prove to an officer that when your work permit expires, you will leave Canada;

Do not expect to work for an employer specified on the list of employers who have not complied with the requirements with the status “ineligible”;

5- Exemptions from Canadian Job Permits

There are foreign workers in very specific occupations who, without Canadian work permits, can temporarily work in Canada. In these cases, to come to Canada, foreign workers would either need to get temporary resident visas or electronic travel permits. Others only need valid passports to be issued.

A professor or academic specialist who assesses or supervises academic projects, research proposals, or theses of a university. For Canadian research groups or colleges, they can work.

Military Personal Personal

Reporter or Video and Media Crew for News

News reporters or members of a reporter’s crew, as well as video or media crew members who are not going to reach the Canadian labor market.

6- Requirements for Work Permit Document

You need to obtain all the necessary documentation for your chosen Canadian work permit program to work in Canada. There are several different forms of work permits in Canada, as you now know, ranging from employer-specific permits to open work permits for postgraduate courses. For this purpose, according to the work permit program you qualify for and plan to apply for, the documentation you need can differ.

Take a look below at a list of documents you need to complete your application for a work permit:

  • Proof showing that you fulfill the requirements of the job being offered
  • Certificate of Police Clearance (no more than 6 months of age)

You will need the following documents if an LMIA is required by your work permit program:

A copy of the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) submitted to your employer by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC); and

You will need the following documents if an LMIA is not required by your work permit program:

A copy of an employment contract from you.

You will need the following documents if you are applying for a post-graduation work permit:

Ultimate transcript; and

A letter from the institution, and/or a formal graduation notice.

You will also need to fill in and sign forms provided by the IRCC, such as the Application for Work Permit Outside of Canada (IMM 1295) and the Family Information Form (IMM 5707), among others, in addition to collecting the above documents for your Canadian work permit.

7- How to request a work permit

You can apply for either a Canadian work permit that includes an Impact Assessment of the Labor Market (LMIA) or one that is excluded from LMIA. Applicants with a provincial appointment, intra-company transferees, persons applying for open work permits such as spouses, students, and temporary residents are excluded from the LMIA criteria for work permits.

When applying for your work permit, the following papers will then be required:

  • Type for Family Information
  • Initial passport, with remaining validity for at least 6 months
  • LMIA is given by the employer or the offer of employment with proof of exemption from an LMIA exempt business (neither required when applying for an open work permit)

If you are accepted successfully, a letter stating that you are permitted to work in Canada and the terms of your permit will be sent to you. This letter is not a work permit from you. You will be released with your work permit when you arrive in Canada by customs officials.

8- Temporary jobs in Canada on Demand

You will continue to extend your work permit as long as you can continue to obtain continued high-demand temporary work while you are in Canada.
