ROCHESTER AT TWILIGHT

A third poem inspired by a photo of Sibel Cahide Gul; this is a stunning image which both fictionalises and reveals the city. The poem attempts to do justice to the drama of the photo through linked haiku-like verses.

Twilight on the Medway

Drenched in indigo,

the river flows towards night.

A blue artistry

edges the ravines of the sky.

Chiliastic light

floods spire, turret, gable, keep.

The phantom city

lasts as long as twilight does.

The river flows towards night.
