BOY WITH GULLS AT RIVERSIDE PARK

A small boy in the level landscape of the park is surrounded by gulls and the scattered shadows of gulls in this photograph by Sibel Gul.  The poem attempts to give a sense of the whirl of movement as the photo does.

boy with gulls

Gulls wheel, a circus

of grab and snaffle; the boy

tosses the bread into the eye

of the cyclone of appetites.

Grey angled wings,

arcs of white fuselage,

mid-air battles of screeches

as each bird asserts its ‘I’.

The boy has his own school

of aerial acrobats, that will leave

as soon as the crumbs run out.

He stands in a wilderness of shingle.
